Lalibela

Dave and I scratched a destination off of my bucket list while in Ethiopia: We went to see the ancient rock churches of Lalibela! I have wanted to visit this remote city in the mountains of Ethiopia since I first heard about it in my African History class in college. These churches were carved down into the rock of the mountain to create churches modeled after Jerusalem about 800 years ago. Archeologists are still not entirely sure how the inhabitants were able to carve such massive, intricate structures out of the mountain, and photos cannot really do these immaculate churches justice. All of the churches in the town are active places of worship and I felt humbled to be allowed to visit such a holy place.
