I love markets. We have seen a big resurgence of farmer’s markets here in Washington DC and I love walking up the street to my neighborhood market on Saturday mornings. There is something special about the way a market creates a safe space for both neighbors and strangers to interact. One of my favorite parts of traveling is visiting markets around the world – and the markets of Thailand did not disappoint. Thailand is often nicknamed the “Land of Smiles” and walking through the markets makes it easy to see why.
I just had to stop and photograph this little one getting his hair cut at the market’s barber.
Yea, Dave tried the bugs…I passed. He reported that they were pretty good.
As I was taking photos I jokingly asked Jub to say something funny to get one of the women to laugh. She proceeded to announce something in Thai very loudly to anyone in the market who could hear. When she was finished, the whole market erupted into laughter. She told me that she said if anyone wanted their photo taken they needed to laugh and I would take their photo. I looked around and the entire market was fake laughing, which quickly turned into everyone’s real laughter. I started snapping photos and eventually just had to sit on the ground because I was laughing too hard. It was such a great moment that transcended language barriers.
The ladies loved Dave. Getting sick of Thailand posts? I’m not. But for those of you who are, I think I only have two left to post. After that I guess we will need to plan our next project!
I love markets…perhaps because I am from an island full of markets too. Beautiful shots.
Happy Wednesday!
Thanks Salma! Happy Friday
Wow..cool shots!
Thank you!
I do love a Thai talaad! I love the way they foster community just as you remarked. Such happenings and opportunities to connect!
Agreed. I enjoyed them so much!
I love the way you capture Thailand! I often find the light and colors here difficult to capture in a flattering way, but you always do such an amazing job with that! I’m totally going to try to learn from you.
Thanks Jade! I will try to learn how to paint pictures with words the way you do! We can learn from each other 🙂
