Markets of Thailand

I love markets. We have seen a big resurgence of farmer’s markets here in Washington DC and I love walking up the street to my neighborhood market on Saturday mornings. There is something special about the way a market creates a safe space for both neighbors and strangers to interact. One of my favorite parts of traveling is visiting markets around the world – and the markets of Thailand did not disappoint. Thailand is often nicknamed the “Land of Smiles” and walking through the markets makes it easy to see why.

market9I just had to stop and photograph this little one getting his hair cut at the market’s barber.

As I was taking photos I jokingly asked Jub to say something funny to get one of the women to laugh. She proceeded to announce something in Thai very loudly to anyone in the market who could hear. When she was finished, the whole market erupted into laughter. She told me that she said if anyone wanted their photo taken they needed to laugh and I would take their photo. I looked around and the entire market was fake laughing, which quickly turned into everyone’s real laughter. I started snapping photos and eventually just had to sit on the ground because I was laughing too hard. It was such a great moment that transcended language barriers.
