Mount Vernon in the Evening

Dave and I are trying to spend more time being tourists in our own city, so we have been trying to make a trip out to Mount Vernon for some time now. We found out that during Memorial Day weekend Mount Vernon opens in the evening for a sunset celebration and since Memorial Day weekend is also our anniversary weekend, we thought it would be the perfect time to check it out!

They had colonial games, dancing and activities for the guests on the Washington’s lawn and had candles lit all around the grounds.

He made the little George Washington puppet dance with his foot as he played – a little ridiculous but surprisingly funny.

The back lawn was full of people sitting on blankets while listening to the colonial music played on a harp and dulcimer. Vendors were setting wine and desserts and we got ourselves some chocolate cake and a funnel cake before finding a place to sit. After going on a tour of George Washington’s house, we sat on the back veranda and watched the sunset over the Potomac River. It was quite lovely.

Mount Vernon is such a beautiful estate and I love being able to learn about George Washington and his legacy so close to home. I hope to go back to Mount Vernon in the near future and go on the National Treasure tour – I think it sounds like a lot of fun.

And here is a little iphone selfie to prove we were actually there. We need to get better at being in photos!

  1. Honestly, I think you don’t need to prove you’re in the place, but a selfie is not a bad idea. 😉
I love your photos in the garden the most, but that guy with a puppet is what I’d like to see in action. 😉

  2. Your photos capture this time of day so perfectly. I loved my trip to Mt. Vernon (forrrrevvvver ago) on an 8th grade field trip from California. For some reason it has always struck a chord in my memory, and I would love to revisit!

  3. I love Mount Vernon! I actually have a Mount Vernon post on my list of blog posts to write this week– though your photos put mine to shame! I’m not sure if you guys are bikers at all, but we love the Mount Vernon bike path that goes all the down there!
