Healthy Summer

Dave and I decided that we wanted to make this summer healthy. After weeks of travel and being stuck inside all winter, we are ready for a bit of a detox. We started eating healthy at the beginning of June by eating mainly lean meats, fruits & vegetables and cutting out everything else. The first few days were a little hard, (what is is about knowing you can’t have something that makes you want it more??) but it has gotten easier every day. I am finding myself hardly craving ‘junk’ anymore. (except Chick Fil A. I am a.l.w.a.y.s. craving Chick Fil A. Thank the Lord we don’t have one in DC) ANYWAYS. A little over a week in and we both feel pretty great. We have each even dropped 5 lbs the first week!

We have been coupling the healthy eating with exercise and are really enjoying this start to a healthy summer. I have found that allowing an occasional glass of wine or frozen yogurt has really helped us stay motivated and has made our healthy eating a little more realistic with summer social engagements. Does anyone have any tips for maintaining healthy eating in a season of hot dogs, ice cream, and road trips? I would love to hear them!

I will update you on the Baker healthy eating summer in a few weeks. Hope to come back with more good news!

  1. Good for you and good luck! For some reason, I find it easier to eat cleanly/better in the summer. The heat makes me want light simple meals (even ice cream isn’t a craving – but it is in January!)

  2. Good for you guys! After being pregnant for basically two years in a row I’m so ready to follow suit. My husband and I both plan on making an overhaul on the way we eat… for our health! I think the 80/20 rule is a good one to follow. Allowing for some treats here and there which I’d think would help prevent just throwing in the towel when you “fail” and keeping you from focusing in on cravings!

  3. I go on lots of road trips. I also like to eat and snack. So, I’ve started bringing a tupperware of fruit as my snack while driving to my desitnation. That way, when I’m at a gas station, I know I have food in my car so I’m much less likely to buy any of the junk sold in there. I also try to always have nuts in my car. Just a handful or two can stave off the meanie munchies.
